It’s no secret that Gen Z are rising to become the strongest generation so far, and that they are transforming the world in the process. Long gone are the days of overly traditional Gen X and Boomer weddings. Gen Z are flying their flag and putting their own unique stamp on this £10 billion industry. Having worked a range of Gen Z weddings as a luxury wedding photographer, I’m here to spill the tea on how Gen Z are giving weddings a total glow up and why I’m 100% here for it.
- Authentic and Intimate
Gen Z are seemingly avoiding grand occasions in favour of smaller and more meaningful celebrations that allow for quality time with guests and a more genuine connection between the couple. This intimate kind of wedding is a joy for me to capture as there are more heartfelt moments and I can focus more on the relationships rather than having to worry about big family arrangements and large numbers of guests. The fact that it’s a bit more budget-friendly for the happy couple is a bonus!
- Prioritising Wellness
Wedding planning is stressful. Fact. Gen Z are experts at caring for their mental health and this extends to their guests as well. They are more likely to do away with any wedding aspect that makes them or their loved ones uncomfortable. Nervous about giving a speech? They’re gone! Two left feet? Bye bye, first dance! This not only reduces stress in the lead up to and on their wedding day, but it helps to make room for the moments that really matter.
- Power in Inclusivity
It has to be said that with each passing generation, minds become more open and thinking becomes more fluid and creative. Gen Z are the first generation now reaching adulthood where this is well and truly evident. With a rise in mixed gender wedding parties, celebrations incorporating both partners’ cultures and accessibility for all, Gen Z weddings are shaping up to be the most diverse, beautiful and positive celebrations yet.
- Daring to Be Bold
If there’s anyone who’s not afraid to slay in a bold colour palette, it’s Gen Z. You only have to look at any wedding florist or venue stylist’s Instagram to see that we’re shifting away from the rustic, clean white and green colour palette to something more exciting and attention grabbing. Hot pinks and oranges are having a moment, as are Bridgerton-style pastels and mismatched bridesmaids dresses, and Gen Z are lowkey here for it.
- Ditching Tradition
With the rise of Gen Z weddings comes a natural decline in previously prescribed wedding traditions. This could be the bride making her entrance alone, doing away with the giving away, scrapping the idea of a top table or having a more informal grazing-style wedding breakfast. Even bride and groom looks are evolving to provide more comfort and casual style. One of my recent brides chose an unconventional short dress with a plunging neckline and dramatic puff sleeves, topped off with a pair of vintage sunglasses. Friend, she ate and left no crumbs.
- Harnessing High-Tech
Another key way in which this tech-savvy generation is redefining weddings is through the use of technology. From wedding websites and drone photography to bougie VR booths, Gen Z are using the latest software and innovations to take their weddings to a whole new level. Living in a digital age means that keeping up with technological developments is key, and Gen Z are way ahead of the curve.
- Sustainability Reigns Supreme
Unfortunately, weddings are often rooted in consumerism, leading to a huge amount of waste once the big day is over. Gen Z are taking steps to change that through recycling their decorations, opting for pre-loved ensembles, sending digital invitations, sourcing their wedding breakfast locally, choosing ethically sourced gemstones for engagement rings and selecting eco-friendly venues. It’s giving “Let’s save our planet,” and I love it.
So, there you have it. A whistle-stop tour of how a Gen Z wedding just hits different and how they are forging a more individual and bespoke path for future generations. If you are a Gen Z couple planning your wedding, I would love to work with you to capture your memories and create something unique, personal and truly breathtaking.
